LiveJournal's role in Russia
While American users use LiveJournal primarily as a diary and it generally remains relatively unknown in the West, Russian users take a different approach to the service: from 2001 onwards, they begin to connect and exchange ideas via LiveJournal (called "ZheZhe" there, after the translation Zhivoy Zhurnal), so that a community gradually emerges and the blogging site takes on more the character of a social network.
For Russian bloggers, government critics, journalists and others, LiveJournal is a place of free expression, as the servers are located in the USA and are therefore beyond state control.
